[Translation] Adrianople. La mosquee Sultan Selim [end]
The Selimiyi Mosque in Edirne, some 250 kilometers from Istanbul, was built in the 16th century. Edirne lies in the only wholly European province of modern Turkey. The mosque was damaged in the first World War, and this damage was been repaired by order of Turkey's founding father, Kemal Ataturk, as a warning to future generations.
Like many major Ottoman mosques, the Selimiye Mosque was at the center of a complex of schools, a hospital and library, food banks for the poor, and a graveyard. Today a health museum is part of the compound.
