The Turkish-German relationship goes back to the Ottoman Empire. Near the end of theat Empire, in 1914, the Turks sided with Germany in World War I with Bulgaria and the Austrian-Hungarian Hapsburg Empire. The resulting defeat of these powers four years later precipitated the demise of the Ottoman Empire the later founding of the Turkish Republic under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The German Embassy in the Therapia area played an important role in this relationship.
Today Turkey again has deep economic and social bonds with Germany. Germany is Turkey's most important commercial partner within the European Union, and Germany is home to a huge population of Turkish immigrant workers.
