Arab settlers started to arrive in Sri Lanka in the 8th Century if not considerably earlier
Traders from many parts of the world were drawn to the shores of Ceylon. Promises of trade in precious items such as gems, pearls, elephants, peacocks and Ceylon cinnamon drew in many merchants. Arab or "Moor" settlement in Sri Lanka probably goes back more than two thousand years even if it has not been documented. This was a popular postcard image in early 20th century Ceylon, of a memorable boy most visitors would have met in town.
