The Buddhist temple also known as Dalada Maligawa
The Dalada Maligawa is one of the most revered Buddhist temples in the world. The relic of Lord Buddha's tooth is kept here, and for this reason is venerated as the holiest shrine in Singhalese Buddhism. Every newly elected leader in Sri Lanka, whether Presidents, party leader or other dignitary must go to the temple immediately after their inauguration. Nestled beside a lake and surrounded by green hills, the temple is suffused with a tranquil and sacred atmosphere.
The former capital city of Kandy, where the temple lies, was founded at the end of the 15th century by a nobleman. A mountain fortress, Kandy resisted Portuguese and Dutch incursions, and it took the English two decades to conquer it. |
