The clothes worn by Sinhalese men blend Western and Eastern fashions
This gentlemen represents the effects of colonialism and modernity at the start of the 20th century. The traditional dress of Sri Lankan men is the white or patterned sarong wrapped around the waist. A long shirt is worn, almost down to the knees. This man's shirt is tucked in, or more likely to be of the shorter Western kind given the collar. Over the shirt he wears a Western jacket and carries an umbrella (for sun and rain).
Today, younger Sinhalese men prefer to wear t-shirts and denim jeans or shorts on while traditional dress is worn only on special occasions.
