An Englishmen established Nuwara Eliya as a hill retreat in the 19th century
Nuwara Eliya in the center of the country faces Pidurutalagala, which is Sri Lanka's highest mountain at over 8,000 feet high. While evidence of pre-historic habitation has been found around this area, it was one Samuel Baker who chose this place for as a colonial hill station. He saw in it a perfect retreat for polo, cricket and hunting, favorite colonial past times.
Like most similar resorts in the subcontinent, it is now a favorite vacation spot for local visitors.
The original message on this divided back card reads: "Feb. 9th 1906 Dear Maude: Did you come here. You never seem to write and I have no idea where you are or where you have been. Regards to your family. Sincerely C.E." |
