Mount Lavinia is just south of Colombo
|
 |
There are two explanations for the name Mount Lavinia. The first is that the Sinhalese name for this area was "Lihinya Kanda" which means "hill of the sea gull". The second, and more romantic, involves the British Governor Sir Thomas Maitland falling in love with a local dancing girl named Lovina Aponsuwa, for whom he named his home shown just above the beach here, and now the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel. |
