The Mount Lavinia Hotel was originally built in 1806 by the British Governor General Sir Thomas Maitland as his residence. The location was a few miles south of Colombo, with a spectacular ocean view. It is said that Sir Thomas fell in love with a local mixed-race dancing girl named Lovina Aponsuwa whom he named the house after.
Near the end of the 19th century, the Mt Lavinia Hotel Company Ltd was established and turned the mansion into what is not one of Colombo's most well-known hotels. |
