This hospital was named in honor of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897
The Victoria Memorial Eye and Ear Hospital was established in 1906. This beautifully designed building faces a roundabout known as Lipton's Circus in Colombo, named after the tea company that helped bring tea from Ceylon to the rest of the world. The first institution for eye treatment was opened in Colombo in 1895, and was known as the Grenier Eye and Ear Institute.
