Coolie women displaying their traditional Indian costumes
|
 |
Coolies are workers, and was a term used to people who did construction and menial labor. In Sri Lanka, many of these were Tamils, brought over by the British to work on the tea plantations in the 19th century. When the Indians migrated to Ceylon, they brought with them traditional costumes. The coolie costumes apparently favored the red, orange, white, and indigo. The basket being carried by the woman was used by coolies around the subcontinent to carry goods, often mud and bricks on a construction site. This is the case even today in the subcontinent, and older people still use the word coolie to refer to such laborers, male or female. |
