Colombo became the capital of Sri Lanka in 1815 under British rule
|
 |
Colombo is a natural port on the Indian Ocean. The town displays the architectural styles of the nations who have occupied it during different centuries of Ceylonese history. The Portuguese occupation ended in 1656 after the Dutch captured the city. The Dutch ruled for 140 years until the British removed them in 1796 and ruled until Independence in 1948. Each of the colonists used the island for the production of various natural resources, from spices like cinnamon to tea, and these industries have defined the country's history. |
