Singapore was originally part of what the British called the Straits Settlements. These included the island of Singapore at the southern tip of the Malay peninsula, and the coastal areas of Malaca, Penang and Dinding to the north.
Originally ruled from British India, these areas were settled in part by immigrants from India, which is why an early Indian publisher like the Ravi Varma Press would publish a postcard with Indian settlers on it. |
