Hindus make up less than 5% of Singapore's population. They played an important role in the growth of the port city. Most of Singapore's Hindus originally came from Tamil Nadu in India to work in the harbor docks.
This temple - one of the most popular early views of Singapore - was originally constructed in the 1820s and is known as the Sri Mariamman Temple. A bigger, reconstructed version occupies the same central location today.
