The Walled City, Manila, was based on the design of a medieval castle

The Walled City of Intramuros had fortress walls, drawbridges and moats to keep the inhabitants safe. The original moats were 2m (7-8') deep. In this image the moats have been filled in. This was done in 1904 by the Americans to decrease the spread of malaria through Manila.
