It was believed that the first shot of the Philippine-American War in 1899 was fired at this location.
The San Juan Bridge was originally built in 1883 as a water conduit to the city of Manila. In 1899, after an uprising against the Spanish, and America's defeat of Spain in the Spanish-American war, the country veered between Independence and becoming an American colony. Both sides saw things differently, until early 1899 when the first shots of Filipino independence fighters killed an American soldier at this bridge. More recently, new research transferred this honor to another location in the city, but San Juan Bridge retains something of its historical reputation.
Today steel pipes are visible above the crumbling brick arches of the bridge.
