Binondo Estero is one of two estuaries bounding the island of Binondo, Manila's most famous Chinese district
The Bridge of Spain was built in 1632 by the Spanish Officials allowing easier access for the Chinese to cross Binondo Estero. The Chinese were forced to build the walls of Intramuros by the Spanish. Before 1570, Ysla de Binondo, as Binondo was originally known,was the center of Chinese trade. In 1594, Binondo was given to the Chinese Catholics tax free to encourage their loyalty to the Spanish government of the time.
