Peshawar is situated on the boundary of the famed Khyber Pass, close to the Afghan border. This city is a trading partner with the neighboring country of Afghanistan.
Its importance as a trade center goes back to Buddhist Gandharan times and the Kushan kingdom that once flourished here over 2,000 years ago. The Peshawar valley and nearby Charsadda distict are full of fertile land that helped support the city's urban population. The Sikhs destroyed much of the town in the early 19th century, but it has since grown into a city of a over 3 million inhabitants. Many refugees from neighboring conflicts like the wars in Afghanistan have also settled here. |
