Murree is the most popular summer resort in Pakistan
Murree, according to local tradition, is named after the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, who is said to be buried here in a small tomb. There is little truth to this assertion, and the name is more likely to come from a former tribe in the area or other source.
The British turned it into a hill station for their troops and civilians serving in the Punjabi and Frontier plains. Today it is barely an hour's drive from Pakistan's capital Islamabad. During the summer it is overrun with tourists as delighted as the British were to escape the heat a few thousand feet below them. |
