The game of football was introduced in the subcontinent during the British Empire
During the British Raj, many football clubs were created in India and Pakistan. Initially, primarily army teams played the game but later local civilians also participated in league and competitive matches.
Little has been unearthed about this particular match, but it was a popular scene on postcards and was played on the field just below Murree's Holy Trinity Church. From the size of the crowd at this tiny hill station, it must have been an important match among British Indian teams.
The first National Football Championship of Pakistan was played at Karachi in 1948. Since then football (soccer) has continued to be played in Pakistan, though it is far less common than cricket or even - at least until recently - field hockey. Due to the popularity of the World Soccer Cup however, it is growing in popularity once again.
