For travelers going into Afghanistan from British India or now Pakistan, Landi Kotal is the major town atop the Khyber Pass before descending towards Jalalabad or Kabul. A major British cantonment was built here. Many campaigns against the nearby Afridi tribesmen were launched from here, and the base itself was often attacked during the regular disturbances towards the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
