Mohammed Ali Jinnah led Muslims in parts of British India to independence in the nation of Pakistan in August 1947 (the eastern wing of Pakistan became Bangladesh in 1971). He did this as leader of the all-India Muslim League, the largest Muslim political party. He also served as Pakistan's first Governor-General until his death in September 1948. Though he rose to prominence in the Indian National Congress expounding Hindu-Muslim unity in the early aprt of the Independence struggle, differences with Mohandas Gandhi and others led him to quit Congress and lead the Muslim League. |
