The Khyber Pass has been a key trade route for thousands of years between Central Asia and India. In the past, traders traveled this stretch on camels and mules to bring silk, porcelain and other goods to be sold in the markets of the Indian subcontinent. Almost every invader of India, from Alexander the Great through the Mugal Emperor Baber has come through this historic pass.
The tower on the home is typical of Afridi and other tribal dwellings in the area. They allow inhabitants to protect their homes from the tower tops, which usually have rifle slots and enable a family or group to congregate together for safety. |
