The Secretariat, built during the colonial era, exemplifies imposing and defensive Victorian colonial architecture.
The Secretariat in the former Rangoon is a historical landmark. In 1947, a group of armed men stormed into the Secretariat and killed Aung San, a Burmese nationalist and founder of the modern Burmese military. A number of his associates were also killed. His daughter is the Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi who has spent most of her life living under house arrest while campaigning for a free Burma or Myanmar.
The Secretariat is now included in a list of heritage landmarks in Yangon, although its condition in 2007 was said to be very poor.  |
