When the British Empire expanded, the colonists brought more than a slice of their culture to the areas they conquered. The Pegu Club of the former capital Rangoon was set up to offer British people a relaxing environment, far from home and the people they ruled. The Pegu Club is said to have inspired a drink, the Pegu Club Cocktail (recipe in link below), based on the perennial colonial favorites: gin and Rose's Lime Juice. The British may have left, but the drinks often remain as staples in the clubs for the new members. |
