The high watch tower and the extensive palace grounds of Fort Mandalay testify to its turbulent history
|
 |
The Mandalay Watch Tower was constructed during the rule of King Thibaw. The palace itself was largely built in the mid-19th century by King Midon. On the summit of this tower, a watchman was posted to monitor fires in town or an attack. The Mandalay Palace Grounds are now home to elements of the Burmese Army. The teak wood from Burmese forests used to construct the original palace is highly ornate and exemplary of some of the finest Burmese craftsmanship. |
