The South Gate is the most popular entrance to the Shwe Dagon Pagoda
The South Gate of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda faces the center of Yangon. The pagoda is said to be over 2,500 years old, dating to the time before the Buddha even appeared. Other findings give it a more recent origin. Given that new religions have historically often occupied temples of old religions they have supplanted throughout Asia, an earlier origin to the temple cannot be ruled out but it may be impossible to confirm.
