Bago Pegu was founded in 573 A.D. During Buddhism's Mon dynastic period, it became a great city and the capital of Lower Myanmar. A seaport was founded there in 825 by two brothers from Thaton, which was then the capital of Suvannabhumi. Bago's golden era started in 1365 when it became the capital of Lower Myanmar, and lasted for 270 years. Early European visitors recognized Bago Pegu's importance as a seaport and center for trade.
Slightly smaller than Texas, Myanmar occupies the Thailand/Cambodia portion of the Indochinese peninsula. |
