Girls in Traditional Dress in the Kachin or Jingphaw region of Myanmar (formerly Burma). From 1885 until 1935, the British imposed colonial rule on the hills of the Kachin region. The Kachin are well known in the West for their heroic resistance to the Japanese during World War II. Due to Christian missionaries who introduced Western education, a majority of Kachins todau are Christian. The Burmese Army quelled a Kachin Rebellion in 1960, and there is still frequent conflict in the region between Kachin tribes and the Myanmar military. |
