Japanese architecture embraced western styles in Meiji era
|
 |
Japanese temples and buildings in the 7th and 8th centuries largely used wood and ceramic tiles. Later wooden planks and roofs of cypress-bark were used through the 12 century. A simplified architecture came into existence during the Edo period (1603 - 1868). The buildings of the Meiji period (1868 - 1912) were greatly influenced by European architectural examples; many Japanese went to Europe during this period and came back with new ideas in the arts and industry. |
