The Russo-Japanese War began in 1904. The Russians were after a warm water port, and the Japanese were concerned at Russia's interest in Korea, which they considered within their sphere of influence. The two countries fought until January 1905 when a Russia sued for peace. The monumental defeat of a European by a new Asian power was in many ways the first step in the end of Western colonialism in Asia.
