Japan has a long history of battleships dating to the 16th century
The first Western-styled warship of Japan was the "Shōhei Maru", built in the 1850s.
In February 1869, the Imperial Japanese Navy received its first iron battleship from the United States. It played a significant role in the Naval Battle of Hakodate Bay in 1869. As Imperial Japan become a great power towards the end of the 19th century, battleships and later aircraft carriers became a key element of Japan's military ascendancy.
As newer battleships were produced by Japan, they were celebrated in postcards. Popular pride in these maritime vessels can be seen in the sophisticated nature of this element, the ship shrouded in white as if it were a deity. Japanese battleships were one of the most celebrated subjects in early postcards, and led to some of the most elaborate postcard art. |
