The arched double Niziu Bridge near the Imperial Palace in Kyoto

The Niziu Bridge is an example of a common arched bridge design found in Japan. Fabricated from stone, the arches were built using metal straps and clamps. Stone piers anchoring both ends of the bridge, and the stone column in the center, help to secure it against damage from earthquakes and typhoons.
