Nijo Castle, Kyoto

Built by the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Nijo Castle is one of the most popular sites in Kyoto.

Tokugawa Ieyasu built Nijo Castle in Kyoto to serve as the primary residence for himself and his successors. The palace building, completed in 1603, is a prime example of Momoyama architecture. Much of the castle, including a five story tower was destroyed by fire in the 18th century.
