Mount Fuji has long been the most popular subject for Japanese artists
The first person to scale Mount Fuji was apparently a 7th century monk. Considered a sacred mountain, women were not allowed to visit the summit until the Meiji era. Commonly portrayed in Japanese art, the most famous example of this is the 36 Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai.
Note the stamp-like border on the top and right of the image, a clever way of acknowledging the postal medium by early Japanese postcard artists. |
