Nagasaki was one of the first major European trading outposts on the Japanese islands
|
 |
The modern city's origins go back to the 16th century and early Portuguese trading expeditions. The modern port city of Nagasaki supports a thriving shipping industry. This city is almost entirely rebuilt after the bombing during World War II that killed almost 80,000 people instantaneously. Nagasaki remains a center of Catholicism in Japan, thanks to early Portuguese influence. |
