In Japan domesticated animals were rare
|
 |
Several explanations are given for the relative absence historically of domesticated animals in the country. The volcanic land of Japan had limited grazing and cultivated areas. Food supplies for humans left little surplus for animals. There is also a cultural dimension, the sense that animals and their products like milk were not clean for humans to consume. This early 20th century image represents modernism from the man's clothes to his pet dog. |
