The Heian period from 800 to 1200 ACE popularized the kimono among Japanese women
Women in Japan wear different types of kimonos based on season, age or events. However, depending on the marital status and age, there are two main categories of formal kimonos. Young unmarried women wear kimonos with long sleeves. Older or married women typically wear kimonos with short sleeves. In general kimonos are used more and more for traditional occasions while modern dress permeates Japanese daily life.
