Torri of Kasuga Temple, Nara

Torii are the cermonial gateways to Shinto temples

Frequently painted vibrant vermillion or red, torii are gates at the entry of both Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. Traditional torii were fabricated from wood or stone. These gates symbolize the transition from the normal to the sacred world.
