The Japanese flag, called Hinomaru or "Sun Disc," is one of the world's most recognizable. The red circle represents the rising sun. Its design apparently dates to the 12th century when samurai first carried folding fans with the image of the rising sun, although there are traces of this symbol many centuries earlier.
This exquisite card which probably dates to the Japanese war with Russia between 1904 and 1905 shows the enrmous design sophistication of these early cards. |
