Japanese priests and envoys who went to China brought tea to Japan in the 8th or 9th centuries
Tea was initially taken up by the priestly classes of Japan. Then Emperor Saga patronized the growth of tea plants and it became the preferred drink of the nobility. The tea ceremonies in Japan were developed by Buddhist monks over the centuries.
This card was an advertising card for Japanese tea, and had a white space in the lower right corner for someone a salesman or firm to put their name or stamp when they sent to a prospect. |
