Hakodate is a small, bustling port city in Hokkaido Prefecture
|
 |
Hakodate is a popular subject on early postcards and images of Japan sent abroad because it was one fo the first ports opened for foreign commerce. One of the three ports opened to foreign trade in 1859 by the US Commander Perry's mission to Japan earlier that decade, it is home to the European-style Goryokaku fort, built in the shape of a five-pointed star in the 1860s. It is now used as a public park that is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing.
