Itsukushima Island in the province of Aki has long been considered holy by Shinto believers
[Original title] The panoramic view of the gateway and Taiseki Temple entrance. Island Itsuku, Aki.[end]
For most of history, common people were not allowed to visit the island. The Itsukushima Shrine was originally built in the late 6th century on piers in the harbor. When the tide is high, the shrine appears to float on water.
