Japan celebrates its New Year (shogatsu or oshogatsu) on January 1st
|
 |
The New Year in Japan is one of the most important annual festivals. It was based on the Chinese calendar for centuries, but was switched to the Western calendar in the 1870s during the Meiji restoration. Note the exceptional design of the card, and the actual stamp and cancellation in the lower left that was carefully placed to respect the card's design. |
