The Hanzen-Ji in Kyoto is a prime example of traditional Japanese architecture.

 |
Japanese architecture has been heavily influenced by Chinese design. However, while most Chinese temples and homes are painted, the Japanese chose to leave the exterior wood exposed. The Hanzen-Ji in Kyoto is an example of classic Japanese architecture with its wood beams and sloping roof. The climate and geological conditions have also been influences on Japanese architecture. Most structures are raised to allow for movement during earthquakes and air circulation during the hot summer months. |
