The Futarasan Shrine dates back to the 8th century

The Futaara Temple of Nikko was built by Priest Shodo at the end of the 8th century. During the Kamakura Period, the Shogunate as well as the baronial families regarded this temple to be the abode of Kanto area's guardian god. Today it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage series of sites.
