The Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo was Japan's first Western-style department store
The Mitsukoshi Department Store was established in 1904. Its origin can be traced back to a kimono store founded in the 17th century. This department store offered the Japanese a chance to purchase articles on the spot by paying cash for the first time. Today Mitsukoshi belongs to the Mitsui group, one of the largest corporate conglomerates in Japan.
