The 15 meter high Buddha statue in Todaiji Temple is in a 48 meter high structure made entirely of wood. Since its construction in 8the century, the Daibutsu has been damaged by earthquakes more than once. The base of the statue that exists at present dates back to the 8th century. The upper part that includes the head was mostly rebuilt during the 12th century. |
