Nagasaki, located on the southwestern coast of Kyushu was a center of European influence in medieval Japan.
[Original] La Centra Publikavendejo, Nagasaki [end]
A great deal of historical European influence led to a significant Christian presence in Nagasaki. Nagasaki was the setting for Puccini's famous opera Madame Butterfly. As home to one of the largest Japanese naval bases, it was the target of the second US atomic bomb during World War II. The city was rebuilt after the war and now currently has a population of over 400,000.
