The first electric tram in Tokyo was introduced in 1890. Soon thereafter, three separate companies developed an initial network of over 900 trams that criss-crossed the city. Later the companies merged and were purchased by the City of Tokyo and renamed Tokyo Shiden (Tokyo Municipal Electric Railway). Electric tramways remained the most popular form of public transportation throughout the city until the 1960s when the city's subway system was built. |
