By 1920, the Imperial Japanese Navy was the world's third largest navy, after the United States Navy and the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom
With the Meiji Restoration in the latter half of the 19th century, the Japanese Navy was rapidly modernized. This was to overcome effects of the policy of international seclusion followed by the shoguns of the prceding Edo period that began in the 17th century. During the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), the Japanese fleet caused heavy damage to the Chinese fleet.
During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the Russian fleet was almost totally wiped out by the Japanese fleet. The pride Japan felt in its navy is reflected in the large number of postcards like this one honoring ships and admirals. Japan's military campaigns in the early 1900s provided a major impetus to the Japanese postcard market. Soldiers sent postcards home, and citizens celebrated the armaments, military leaders and victories of Japanese forces.
